A night meant to celebrate journalism and the First Amendment turned into one of the most alarming security incidents in modern American political history. On the evening of April 25, 2026, a gunman stormed a security checkpoint outside the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. — forcing President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and hundreds of guests to scramble for safety.
The suspect has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. Here's everything we know about who he is, what happened that night, and the charges he now faces.
The Incident: What Happened at the WHCA Dinner?
The White House Correspondents' dinner is one of Washington's most iconic annual traditions — a formal gala bringing together the President, top government officials, journalists, and celebrities to celebrate press freedom. This year's event was already historic: it marked the first time President Trump attended the dinner while in office.

At approximately 8:45 p.m. ET, chaos erupted. A suspected gunman stormed a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, forcing President Donald Trump, cabinet members, and a ballroom full of guests to scramble for safety.
As agents engaged with the suspect, a chaotic scene unfolded inside the Washington Hilton hotel ballroom. Officers in tactical gear with long guns jumped over tables, brandishing their weapons as the president and other dignitaries, such as Vice President JD Vance, were rushed from the stage. Attendees ducked under their tables.
Within minutes, Secret Service agents were heard yelling "shots fired" over radio. A Secret Service agent was struck by a round but was wearing a bulletproof vest and is expected to be OK. President Trump later told reporters: "The vest did the job."
A total of at least five to eight gunshots were fired during the incident, according to two law enforcement sources.
Who Is Cole Allen?
Education and Background
The alleged shooter has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from California.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Allen graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Caltech confirmed his graduation. He then earned his Master's degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills, in May 2025.
On his LinkedIn, Allen described himself as a "game dev, engineer, scientist, teacher" from the Los Angeles area. While at Caltech, he participated in the Caltech Christian Fellowship and the Caltech Nerf Club, and was featured in a local news report in 2017 for developing a prototype emergency brake for wheelchairs.
Career: Teacher and Indie Game Developer
Allen worked for a tutoring firm in Torrance called C2 Education. He received a "Teacher of the Month" award from the company in December 2024. C2 Education is a national private tutoring and test-preparation company focused on college-bound students.
Beyond teaching, Allen described himself as a video game developer, and appears to have published an indie game called Bohrdom on the Steam gaming platform for $1.99. He registered a trademark for the game's name in 2018, and wrote on LinkedIn that he was "currently developing a second game, working name 'First Law.'"
Political Donations
Allen donated $25 to Kamala Harris' presidential campaign in October 2024, according to Federal Election Commission records.
How Did He Get Inside the Hotel?
One of the most pressing questions is: how did an armed man get so close to the President?
Access to the hotel was restricted to hotel guests, people with tickets to the dinner, invitation holders to the receptions, or those with WHCA affiliation documents. The 2,300 guests had to pass through several checks including showing tickets and passing through Secret Service and TSA-crewed magnetometers.
The chief of Washington, D.C.'s police department said investigators think the suspect was staying as a guest at the Washington Hilton, where the annual dinner was held. This gave him inside access to the venue before he made his move.
Security camera footage released by Trump on social media shortly after the incident shows the suspect running past security officers who appear to be disassembling the metal detectors.

The Weapons He Carried
The suspect was armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives, and "exchanged fire" with law enforcement officers when he was intercepted and taken into custody, interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffery Carroll told reporters.
The quantity and variety of weapons strongly indicate premeditation. The suspect was not struck by gunfire but was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
What Was His Motive?
Cole Allen told law enforcement following his arrest that he wanted to shoot Trump administration officials. The suspect didn't specifically say he was targeting President Trump, just "administration officials," a law enforcement source said.
Officials have said he has no criminal record and was not on the radar of law enforcement in Washington, D.C. NBC News A formal motive has not been determined, and the suspect is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday.
President Trump, speaking at a late-night press conference, described Allen as a "lone wolf" and a "would-be assassin." D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed that Allen acted alone.

Charges Filed Against Cole Allen
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced that Allen had been charged with two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence and one count of assault on an officer using a dangerous weapon. Pirro said that further information could lead to additional charges.
If convicted on all current counts, Allen faces significant mandatory federal prison time under federal sentencing guidelines.
The Scene in Torrance, California
While authorities processed the crime scene in Washington, a parallel operation unfolded on the West Coast.
FBI agents arrived outside the suspected gunman's residence on Gramercy Avenue in Torrance. There was a very large law enforcement scene in the residential neighborhood, including FBI agents in tactical gear and armored vehicles.
A next-door neighbor told CNN they did not see Allen often, but he was there "a couple of days ago." The neighbor said the suspected gunman's father is friendly and chatty, adding that they spoke frequently.
Trump's Reaction
At a news conference at the White House, Trump described the gunman as a "lone wolf" and said he was "taken down by some very brave members of Secret Service."
Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn posted a statement saying: "Tonight, a coward attempted to create a national tragedy."
Trump also posted footage and photos on Truth Social — including an image of Allen face-down on the ground after being apprehended.
A Night to Remember — For All the Wrong Reasons
CBS News senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang, also the president of the White House Correspondents' Association, was sitting next to President Trump as the incident unfolded. "What was going through my mind is my 7-year-old daughter was there. My husband was there. My parents were there," Jiang said. "On a night where we all came together to celebrate the freedoms and the First Amendment, we also have to think about how fragile they are in this country because … shootings and would-be shootings happen every day."
What Happens Next?
Cole Allen is expected to be arraigned in federal court on Monday. Prosecutors have signaled that additional charges are likely as the investigation deepens. The FBI continues to search his Torrance residence and is combing through his digital footprint — including social media, communications, and gaming activity — to build a fuller picture of his intent and planning.
The Secret Service will also face intense scrutiny over how an armed hotel guest was able to breach a checkpoint at an event attended by the President of the United States.
