Renault To Launch A New 7-Seater SUV & Compact SUV Bridger In India

Renault is back — and it means serious business in India. After years of operating with a relatively thin product lineup, the French automaker is now rolling out its most ambitious India offensive ever. Two brand-new SUVs are in the pipeline: a 7-seater family SUV (expected to be called the Bigster or Boreal) and a rugged sub-4-metre compact SUV called the Bridger. Together, these two models signal Renault's determination to reclaim its place as a top-tier SUV brand in one of the world's fastest-growing car markets.

Here's a deep dive into both upcoming Renault SUVs — what they are, when they're coming, how much they'll cost, and who they'll go up against.

Renault's Big India Plan: A Full Portfolio by 2027

Renault's big comeback in India started with the new Duster in 2026. At the entry level there is the Kwid, followed by the Kiger in the compact SUV space. Above that — in the order mentioned — will sit the Bridger, the new Duster and the seven-seat Bigster. In short, Renault will soon have a car for buyers with budgets varying from around Rs 4 lakh to nearly Rs 30 lakh.

Renault has also made significant investments in its India operations, which now represent its largest commitment outside France. The company has taken full control of the manufacturing facility in India from the Renault Nissan Alliance, signalling a stronger long-term focus on the market.

This is not just a product launch — it's a full-scale reinvention. For the latest auto and technology news, browse our on ViralDose.

Part 1: The Renault 7-Seater SUV (Bigster / Boreal)

What Is It?

Renault is also readying a larger, 7-seat derivative of the new Duster, expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026. With an exterior likely to take styling cues from the Boreal or the Bigster sold in international markets, this model will feature a longer body, three rows of seats and distinct design elements to set it apart from the standard SUV.

It is most likely to be the 7-seater version of the Dacia Bigster or Renault Boreal. Testing of the new SUV has already started on Indian roads.

Renault has already been clear about one thing: it will not be just a Duster with 2 extra seats in the third row. It will be a proper 7-seater SUV with generous space for all occupants.

Size and Dimensions

The Bigster for India is expected to measure around 4.6 meters in length with an expected wheelbase of around 2.74 meters.  The India-spec model, however, is expected to be around 4.7 meters in length to free up more space in the third row.

Design and Features

The upcoming Renault Duster-based 7-seater SUV was heavily disguised when spotted. It appears to be longer than the Renault Duster and has a larger wheelbase. It is expected to feature the same front fascia, high ground clearance, and chunky bash plates, along with prominent squared-off wheel arches, a smaller rear windscreen, and a larger boot.

Inside, the cabin is loaded with modern tech. It will have dual 10-inch screens for infotainment and driver's display, premium sound system, LED mood lighting, panoramic sunroof, powered driver's seat, ventilated front seats, 360-degree panoramic view.  The second row of seats is expected to feature sliding and reclining functions, along with a one-touch fold functionality.

On the safety front, the SUV will get multiple airbags, ESP, hill launch and descent control, hands-free parking, adaptive full LED headlights, and 360-degree panoramic view.

Engine and Powertrain

The new 7-seater Duster will be powered by a 1.3-litre, turbocharged direct injection engine that produces 156hp and 270Nm of torque. Transmission choices are likely to include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic double wet clutch EDC. The SUV will also receive a hybrid derivative in 2027. The hybrid version could get a 108bhp petrol engine paired to a 51bhp electric motor, a starter generator and a small 1.4kWh battery, with a combined output of around 155bhp.

Both the Duster and the 7-seater are expected to be manufactured locally at Renault's Chennai plant. Launch Date and Expected Price

The new 7-seater Renault SUV will be launched before the end of FY27, by March 2027. Some reports suggest the petrol version will arrive by mid-2026, around July-August, while the hybrid model will follow in 2027.

In terms of pricing, in the Indian market, the Boreal will target some of the most popular names in the 7-seater segment, such as the Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, and MG Hector Plus. Expect it to be priced between ₹18 lakh and ₹25 lakh (ex-showroom), placing it squarely in the heart of the premium family SUV segment.

Part 2: Renault Bridger — The Compact SUV Made in India

What Is It?

Renault has officially revealed the Bridger SUV concept, previewing a rugged new compact SUV for India. Developed entirely by Renault's Indian team at the Renault Design Centre Chennai (RDCC), the Bridger SUV concept signals the brand's serious commitment to reclaiming market share.

The Renault Bridger concept has made its global debut on March 10, 2026. It will be developed in India and the production of this model will commence in India in 2027. It will be offered with multiple powertrains including an electric version.

Renault's head of naming strategy, Sylvia dos Santos, suggested that the Bridger name could be retained for the production model. "With Renault Bridger, we are adding to our family of names based on English words. The name is part of the same approach as the name of Renault Duster. It's a powerful, robust and versatile name and opens a new page in our international offensive," she said.

Bold, Boxy Design

The Bridger Concept adopts a boxy, upright stance with strong off-road design cues. At the front, the SUV features a flat grille panel with illuminated Renault lettering, flanked by squared-off headlamps and LED DRLs. Chunky bumpers, prominent body cladding, and skid plate elements further emphasise its rugged character.

Along the sides, the concept gets squared wheel arches, thick cladding, and large alloy wheels wrapped in off-road-oriented tyres. A contrasting black roof and roof rails enhance the SUV's adventurous appeal. At the rear, the Bridger Concept features vertically stacked tail-lamps and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, reinforcing its off-road identity.

Renault has also confirmed that the model will offer 400 litres of boot space — more than any other compact SUV currently available in India.

Platform and Powertrain

The production-spec version of the Renault Bridger will be based on the brand's R-GMP architecture. Bridger could get multiple powertrain options including petrol, hybrid and fully electric.

The multi-energy strategy is particularly significant. No other compact SUV currently offers petrol, hybrid, and EV options from a single platform. This future-proofs the Bridger against evolving fuel prices and emission regulations.

Space and Practicality

The Renault Bridger offers 200mm rear knee room, claimed to be class-leading in the sub-4 metre compact SUV segment.  Renault further claims the Bridger will provide best-in-class interior space with plenty of headroom across all rows.

Rivals It Will Take On

Rivals will include the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Kia Syros, Skoda Kylaq and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Standing out in such a crowded segment will not be easy.

In terms of design philosophy, the Bridger's closest rival could be the upcoming Mahindra Vision S, which follows a similarly rugged approach and is also expected to arrive around 2027. That could turn into an interesting rivalry to watch.

India First, Then the World

The production version is expected to launch before the end of 2027, with India set to be its first market. The SUV will later be exported to other developing markets such as Africa and the Middle East. This "Made in India, for the world" approach is a first for Renault and reflects how seriously the company now views the Indian market.

Launch Date and Expected Price

The Renault Bridger launch date in India is expected around Q3 2027, potentially during the Diwali festive season. Production at Chennai begins by end of 2027.

The Renault Bridger price is expected between Rs 7 lakh and Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom). Base petrol variants may start around Rs 7–8 lakh, while hybrid versions could reach Rs 12–14 lakh.

Why This Matters for Indian Car Buyers

Renault's return is not just good news for Renault fans — it's great news for the entire Indian automotive market. More choices, more competition, and more innovation mean better deals for buyers across every budget.

In the past, Renault has had bursts of important product launches but never a sustained product offensive. This time, however, things appear very different. The company is now planning a far more complete portfolio for India.

With the Duster already launched, the 7-seater Bigster testing on Indian roads, and the Bridger concept grabbing eyeballs worldwide, Renault's India story is entering its most exciting chapter yet. Whether you're a growing family looking for a spacious 7-seater or a young buyer who wants a rugged, head-turning compact SUV — Renault has something cooking for you.
