India will look to tighten their grip on the five-match T20I series when they take on West Indies in the second game at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday, October 9. Shreyas Iyer's men lead 1-0 after an eight-wicket thrashing in Lucknow, and the 7 pm IST start gives fans a prime-time contest heading into the weekend.
West Indies, who pushed India hard for long stretches of the opening game, need a quick reset if they are to stop the hosts from running away with the series.
How India won the 1st T20I
At the Ekana Stadium on Tuesday, West Indies were bowled out for 171 in 19.1 overs. Sherfane Rutherford hit 56 and captain Shai Hope made 52, but India's spinners and debutant all-rounder Naman Dhir kept chipping away. Dhir finished with 3 for 31 on debut, Axar Patel took 2 for 26, including a double-wicket maiden at the end of the powerplay, and Kuldeep Yadav picked up 2 for 33.
The chase was all about the captain. India lost Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson early and were 35 for 2 in the powerplay, but Iyer smashed an unbeaten 102 off 43 balls with 10 fours and six sixes, his maiden T20I hundred. Ishan Kishan (37 not out off 27) gave him steady company in an unbroken stand of 137, and India got home in just 14.4 overs with 32 balls to spare.

Ranchi pitch report and ground records
Ranchi has not been a high-scoring T20I venue. Across seven T20 internationals, the average first-innings score is around 138, and the average second-innings score drops to about 111. Teams batting second have won four of those games and teams batting first three, so captains often like to chase here, especially with dew likely in the evening.
- Highest total: 196/6 by India against Sri Lanka
- Highest successful chase: 155/3 in 17.2 overs by India against New Zealand
- Lowest total defended: 130/6 by India Women against Sri Lanka Women
The surface usually has a bit for the spinners as the match goes on, which brings Kuldeep, Axar and Washington Sundar into play. Batters who rotate strike well may matter more here than those who only look for boundaries.
Team news and likely XIs
India have little reason to change a winning combination, though there is debate over whether young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should get a look at the top of the order after Samson's early dismissal in Lucknow. The team management has not made any announcement.
India (probable): Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (c), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Mayank Yadav.
West Indies (probable): Shai Hope (c, wk), Kamil Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, Romario Shepherd, Matthew Forde, Shamar Springer, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph.
Players to watch
Shreyas Iyer
India's T20I captain is in the form of his life. His hundred in Lucknow came at a strike rate of over 230, and he is now among the top-ranked T20I batters in the world. Another big knock in Ranchi would all but seal his place as a long-term leader in the format.
Shai Hope
The West Indies captain has already scored two ODI hundreds on this tour and followed it with a fifty in the first T20I. If he can bat deep, the visitors have the hitters around him to post a total that tests India on a slower Ranchi surface.
Naman Dhir
The debutant made an instant impact with the ball. How Iyer uses him in the middle overs could be an important tactical thread through the series.

What's at stake
A win in Ranchi would put India 2-0 up with three to play and give the selectors room to try fringe players such as Sooryavanshi, Prince Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi later in the series. For West Indies, a defeat would leave them needing to win all three remaining games, a tall order on Indian pitches. Expect the visitors to come out swinging.
