Madhya Pradesh turned 71 on Sunday, November 1, and the state is celebrating with a three-day Rajyotsav at Bhopal's historic Lal Parade Ground. Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav is the chief guest at the state-level event, which runs from November 1 to 3 with music, folk dance, exhibitions, a food festival and awards for students and farmers.
This year's theme is "Virasat se Vikas" – from heritage to development – and the festival is meant to showcase seven decades of the state's journey alongside its cultural roots.
Why November 1 is special for Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh was formed on November 1, 1956, under the States Reorganisation Act, bringing together Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, Bhopal State and parts of the old Central Provinces. Several other states share the same foundation day, including Karnataka, Kerala, Haryana and Chhattisgarh, which split from Madhya Pradesh in 2000. That is why November 1 sees celebrations across much of India.

From "Bimaru" to growth story
In his Foundation Day message, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav spoke of the state's journey from being counted among the "Bimaru" states to a developing, self-reliant Madhya Pradesh. Alongside the celebrations, the state government has announced plans for a new MSME industrial development company that will let private investors build industrial parks with government grants, and 16 new hostels for Scheduled Caste students across 14 districts at a cost of Rs 68.80 crore.
The guest list for the Bhopal events reflects that pitch, with industrialists, start-up founders, self-help group members, students, families of martyred soldiers and freedom fighters all invited to the celebrations.
What it means for visitors
If you are in Bhopal, the Rajyotsav is a good chance to catch top artists, taste food from different regions of the state and see the government's development showcases in one place. Expect heavy crowds in the evenings and traffic around Lal Parade Ground, so plan to arrive early and use public transport where possible.
