New Zealand head into the third T20I against India with their back against the wall and their pace attack reshuffled. Senior seamer Matt Henry has been ruled out of the rest of the T20I series with a calf strain, while speedster Lockie Ferguson will sit out the Wellington game on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, as part of workload management. With India 2-0 up in the five-match series, the Kiwis must win to keep it alive.

What New Zealand announced

Henry bowled just two overs in the second T20I at Christchurch on Saturday before leaving the field with a tight calf, captain Mitchell Santner said after the match. He will stay in Christchurch to recover and is expected to link up with the ODI squad in Auckland ahead of the first ODI on November 4.

Ferguson's break is precautionary. He will travel to Auckland and rejoin the group for the fourth and fifth T20Is. Head coach Rob Walter said the depth in the squad allows the team to rotate its fast bowlers. “We're very fortunate with the depth in the squad to be able to call upon different players,” he said.

Who comes in

  • Kyle Jamieson, yet to play in the series, travels to Wellington for the third T20I. He may then turn out for Canterbury in the Ford Trophy on October 31 before joining ODI preparations.
  • Matt Fisher covers the Wellington match before heading back to New Zealand A for their four-day game against India A.
  • Blair Tickner joins for the last three T20Is.
  • Josh Clarkson is available for the final two matches.
  • Jacob Duffy, Nathan Smith and Adam Milne remain in the mix.

Tickner and Clarkson were originally named as cover for the injured Zak Foulkes and Mark Chapman, so New Zealand's injury list has been growing through the series.

How India got to 2-0

India have won both games in Christchurch by four wickets. The opener on October 22 was set up by Sanju Samson and Naman Dhir, and the second match on October 24 went down to the final over, with Tilak Varma hitting a match-winning 51 and his partnership with Nitish Kumar Reddy carrying India home. New Zealand's bowlers held the upper hand for long stretches of that game before slipping at the death – and losing Henry mid-match did not help.

For Shreyas Iyer's young side, the third T20I is a chance to seal the series with two games to spare.

The bigger picture for New Zealand

Losing a home T20I series 3-0 would sting for a side that has made a habit of being tough to beat on its own pitches. Santner's group has been competitive in both games so far, but finishing has been the problem, and the change in personnel puts extra pressure on Jacob Duffy and Adam Milne to lead the attack at the death. Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell and Devon Conway will also need to give the bowlers a bigger total to defend.

What it means for India fans

A weakened New Zealand pace attack without Henry and Ferguson could open the door for India's top order, including Abhishek Sharma, Samson and teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, to cut loose in Wellington. But Jamieson's height and bounce on a fresh surface could be a different challenge altogether. India may also be tempted to give game time to bench players once the series is secured, though with a 2-0 lead the team management is likely to go for the kill first.

The match starts at lunchtime in India, so fans can catch the action on Sony Sports Network and the Sony LIV app.

What happens next

After the T20Is, the teams move into a five-match ODI series starting in Auckland on November 4, followed by two Tests in early December. New Zealand will want Henry and Ferguson fresh for those longer formats, which explains the careful handling now – but first they need a win in Wellington to stay in the T20I series.
