India have opened their tour of New Zealand with a statement. Chasing a daunting 226 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday, Shreyas Iyer's side got home by four wickets with two balls to spare, thanks to a blistering start from Sanju Samson and a fearless finish from Naman Dhir. The win gives India a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.
New Zealand post their highest home T20I total
Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl, but for most of the first innings that decision looked costly. Finn Allen set the tone at the top with 45 off 24 balls, and Glenn Phillips then took the game away from India's bowlers with an unbeaten 82 off just 40 deliveries, studded with eight fours and three sixes. Phillips brought up his fifty in 27 balls and kept finding the short boundaries late in the innings.
Bevon Jacobs chipped in with a quick 31 off 16 balls, while Daryl Mitchell (28) and Tim Seifert (24) also got starts. New Zealand finished on 225 for 4 in their 20 overs, which is their highest T20I total on home soil.
India's bowling, missing Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, had a tough evening. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, back in international colours for the first time since 2022, leaked runs at the death, and Axar Patel went for 51 in his four overs while picking up a wicket. Mayank Yadav (1 for 40) and Arshdeep Singh, who also effected a run-out, were the other wicket-takers.
Samson lights up the chase
Any doubts about the chase were settled quickly. Sanju Samson attacked from ball one and reached his half-century in just 23 deliveries. Alongside Abhishek Sharma, who smashed 29 off 12 balls with three sixes, he put on 93 for the first wicket, and India were 94 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.
Samson eventually fell to New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner for 67 off 33 balls, an innings that included eight fours and four sixes. Michael Bracewell had earlier removed Abhishek. That is where the Kiwis fought back: Ishan Kishan went for 1 and Tilak Varma struggled to 6 off 11 balls, and suddenly the required rate was climbing.
Iyer, Axar and Dhir finish the job
Captain Shreyas Iyer steadied things with a composed 42 off 28 balls, and his 45-run stand with Axar Patel (24 off 14) for the fifth wicket kept India within touching distance. When both fell, the game was still open, but Naman Dhir took it out of New Zealand's reach. Dhir hammered 42 not out from just 15 balls, with five fours and two sixes, and sealed the result with a six.
Dhir has quietly built a reputation as a death-overs specialist in T20Is, and this knock will strengthen his claim for a regular finishing role in the side.

What it means for India
This is a new-look Indian T20 side under Iyer, and the last few months have been bumpy, with series defeats in Ireland and England and a 2-2 draw at home against the West Indies. A 226-run chase on New Zealand soil, against the side India beat in the T20 World Cup final in March, is exactly the kind of result that settles a dressing room.
The batting depth was the big positive. Even after losing three quick wickets in the middle overs, India had Iyer, Axar and Dhir to absorb the pressure and accelerate. The concern is the bowling: conceding 225 on a ground with short square boundaries is not unusual, but the death overs will need work before the second game.
What's next: full series schedule
- 2nd T20I: October 24, Hagley Oval, Christchurch
- 3rd T20I: October 27, Sky Stadium, Wellington
- 4th T20I: October 30, Eden Park, Auckland
- 5th T20I: November 1, Seddon Park, Hamilton
With the second match at the same venue just two days away, expect New Zealand to tighten their plans against Samson in the powerplay, and India to rethink their death bowling combination. Varun Chakravarthy, declared fit before the series, could come into contention.
