Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has finished its first week in theatres as one of the biggest releases of the year. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the Nelson Dilipkumar action drama, which opened on October 15, has grossed around Rs 582 crore worldwide in seven days, with its India net collection crossing the Rs 300 crore mark.
A first week powered by the festive season
Jailer 2 arrived in cinemas right in the middle of the Dussehra holiday stretch, and that timing has paid off. The film opened with an estimated Rs 59.7 crore net in India on day one, dipped on its second day, and then climbed back up over the weekend and the festival holidays. Day 4 and Day 6 were particularly strong, with collections in the mid-40s to mid-50s crore range.
The first big drop came on Day 7 (Wednesday, October 21), when the film earned an estimated Rs 28 crore net in India as the holiday rush eased. That is a fall of roughly 40% from the previous day, which is normal for a big-ticket release returning to working-day business.
Tamil leads, Telugu and Hindi add muscle
As expected, the Tamil version is doing the heavy lifting. Trade estimates show it contributing around two-thirds of the film's daily India collections, with the Telugu and Hindi dubbed versions adding meaningful numbers. Overseas markets have contributed over Rs 200 crore gross so far.

The cast and the story so far
Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer whose quiet family life is upended by violence in the 2023 blockbuster. The sequel brings back Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa, Yogi Babu and Rithvik from the first film, and adds a heavyweight supporting cast that includes S.J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan and Suraj Venjaramoodu. Mohanlal also features, and Hrithik Roshan makes a special appearance that has become one of the most talked-about moments among fans on social media.
Sun Pictures has already called the film an "industry blockbuster", and the steady weekday holds suggest audiences are coming back for repeat viewings, not just the first-day rush.
How the week compares
To put the numbers in context, the sequel has come within touching distance of the original film's entire worldwide run in just seven days. Part of that is the wider multi-language release and the festive window, and part of it is the goodwill the first film built. Trade watchers will also note that the film has already passed the reported lifetime collection of Hanuman Ansh, one of the year's other big hits.
Records within reach
The big question now is how far Jailer 2 can go. The original Jailer reportedly finished its run at about Rs 605 crore worldwide, and the sequel should cross that figure within the next few days. After that, Vijay's Leo (about Rs 620 crore) and Rajinikanth's own 2.0, which is widely reported to have earned around Rs 700 crore, stand as the next big benchmarks for Tamil cinema.
Some in the trade have started talking about the Rs 1,000 crore club, which no Tamil film has entered so far. That will depend on how well the film holds in its second weekend, especially with competition from other releases, including Vijay Deverakonda's Ranabaali in the Telugu states.
What it means for audiences and the industry
For theatre owners in Tamil Nadu and across the South, a film like this is a lifeline, filling screens on weekdays and bringing families back to single screens. For the wider Indian film industry, Jailer 2 is another reminder that star-driven South Indian films continue to travel well in Hindi-speaking markets and overseas.
Fans can expect the film's OTT streaming date to be announced only after its theatrical run settles. Until then, the second weekend numbers, due early next week, will tell us whether Jailer 2 is chasing records or simply a very big hit.
