Tiger Muthuvel Pandian is back, and so are the crowds. Rajinikanth's Jailer 2, which hit theatres worldwide on Thursday, October 15, has collected an estimated Rs 59.70 crore net in India on its opening day, according to trade tracker Sacnilk. Add overseas earnings and the Nelson Dilipkumar-directed sequel has crossed Rs 125 crore gross worldwide in just 24 hours.

It is a massive start for the sequel, with fans in Tamil Nadu turning the first day into a festival of whistles, crackers and packed early-morning shows.

Language-wise breakdown

As expected, the original Tamil version did the heavy lifting, but the Telugu dub also posted a strong start.

TamilRs 43.35 crore net, 9,326 shows, 70.8% occupancy
TeluguRs 12.50 crore net, 2,792 shows, 56.2% occupancy
HindiRs 3.50 crore net, 4,371 shows, 22% occupancy
KannadaRs 35 lakh net, 110 shows, 54% occupancy

The Tamil occupancy of over 70 per cent across more than 9,000 shows is the standout number and shows how strong Rajinikanth's pull remains in his home market. The Telugu figure of Rs 12.5 crore also signals solid demand in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where Rajinikanth has a loyal following.

Why the Hindi number is lower

The Hindi version opened at a modest Rs 3.5 crore with about 22 per cent occupancy. A big reason is distribution: the Hindi release skipped the major multiplex chains PVR INOX and Cinepolis over a dispute on the film's OTT window, which cut it off from a large chunk of North India's premium screens. Even so, it ran in more than 4,300 shows, mostly in single screens and smaller chains.

About the film

Jailer 2 is the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster Jailer, which became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films ever. Rajinikanth returns as retired jail officer Muthuvel Pandian, with Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik reprising their roles. New additions to the cast include S.J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Vidya Balan.

The film is packed with star cameos – Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Vijay Sethupathi, Jackie Shroff, Hrithik Roshan and Vinayakan all appear – which has helped it draw audiences across language markets. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music, with cinematography by Vijay Kartik Kannan and editing by R. Nirmal.

What it means for Indian cinema

A Rs 125 crore global opening is a big shot in the arm for theatres heading into the festive season. The first Jailer showed that a well-mounted Rajinikanth entertainer can travel beyond Tamil Nadu, and the sequel's overseas share – about Rs 55 crore on day one – confirms the strength of the Tamil diaspora market in the Gulf, Malaysia, Singapore, the US and the UK.

The real test, as always, will be the weekend. A Thursday release gives the film a four-day opening run, and word of mouth over Friday and Saturday will decide whether it can match or beat the lifetime business of the first part.

The Thursday advantage

Releasing on a Thursday was a smart move by the makers. It gives the film an extended four-day weekend to build numbers before the usual Monday dip, and lets the fan rush of day one spill into Friday and Saturday family audiences. Trade watchers typically treat the first-weekend total as the clearest early sign of a film's lifetime potential, so the next three days will matter a lot for Jailer 2.

What happens next

Day 2 figures will come in by Friday night, and trade watchers will look closely at how much the film holds after the fan-driven first day. If the Tamil and Telugu versions keep up their momentum, Jailer 2 could be heading for a massive extended weekend. We will update the collection numbers as they come in.
