If you use your phone mostly for calls and depend on Wi-Fi for the internet, a cheaper recharge option has just arrived. Bharti Airtel has launched three voice and SMS-only prepaid plans priced at Rs 185, Rs 203 and Rs 206. The plans come just days before the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) revised consumer protection rules take effect on October 21, 2026.

None of the three plans includes mobile data. Instead, they offer unlimited calling and a fixed SMS allowance, which makes them a practical fit for feature phone users, senior citizens and people who keep a second SIM only for calls.

The Rs 185 plan is the cheapest option. For Rs 18 more, the Rs 203 plan adds two days of validity, while the Rs 206 plan renews on the same date each calendar month, which is handy for people who like to recharge on a fixed date, such as right after salary or pension day.

Why Airtel launched these plans now

The plans are a response to TRAI's Telecom Consumer Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026, which the regulator announced on September 22. Over the past few years, most prepaid plans in India have bundled data with calls, which meant that people who never used mobile internet were still paying for it.

Under the new rules, operators must offer voice and SMS-only special tariff vouchers wherever they have data-bundled plans with validity of 30 days or less. They also need to offer at least one voice and SMS-only voucher that renews on the same calendar date every month, and at least one with validity longer than 30 days. TRAI has also asked for an appropriate reduction in tariffs for these vouchers compared with data plans.

For a household that has broadband at home, or for an elderly parent who only needs to stay reachable, paying for gigabytes of unused data every month has long felt wasteful. The new plans give such users a simpler choice, and they also make it easier to keep a secondary number alive without spending on data that never gets used.

How to recharge with an Airtel voice-only plan

  1. Open the Airtel Thanks app or visit the Airtel website.
  2. Enter or select your prepaid Airtel number.
  3. Go to the prepaid plans section and look for the voice or calling-only plans.
  4. Choose Rs 185, Rs 203 or Rs 206 based on the validity you want.
  5. Pay through UPI, card or net banking and check the confirmation SMS.

Who should consider these plans

These plans make the most sense for a few groups of users:

  • Feature phone users who cannot use mobile data at all.
  • Senior citizens who mainly make calls to family.
  • Home and office Wi-Fi users who rarely need mobile internet.
  • Second SIM holders who keep a number active for OTPs, banking alerts and calls.

One point to keep in mind: with no data at all, you will not be able to use WhatsApp, UPI apps or maps on mobile data. If you need even a little internet away from Wi-Fi, a data add-on or a regular bundled plan may still be the better choice.

What it means for Jio and Vi users

Airtel is reported to be the first operator to roll out such plans under the revised rules. Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea will also have to bring their prepaid line-up in line with TRAI's framework, so customers of these operators should keep an eye out for new voice-only options.

What happens next

Once the rules come into force, TRAI will monitor whether operators are offering compliant vouchers and whether the prices are reasonable compared with data-bundled packs. For millions of low-income and rural subscribers, the change could mean a meaningfully smaller monthly phone bill.
