Mumbai Indians have turned to one of their own. The five-time IPL champions on Saturday, October 24, named Kieron Pollard as their new head coach for IPL 2027, replacing Mahela Jayawardene, who stepped down earlier this month. The West Indian, who spent his entire IPL playing career in the blue and gold, now becomes the eighth head coach in the franchise's history.
The appointment comes just weeks before the IPL 2027 mini-auction, which is scheduled for December 16 in Goa – giving Pollard little time to settle in before he helps shape the squad.
"MI Has Been a Huge Part of My Life"
In a statement shared by the franchise, Pollard said Mumbai Indians had been "a huge part of my life and career" and that he understood "the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold." Team owner Nita Ambani noted that he has continued to share his experience with the team in a coaching capacity since hanging up his boots as a player.
Pollard, now 39, is still active in franchise cricket and turned out for MI New York in Major League Cricket this year.
Pollard's Mumbai Indians Record
Few overseas players are as closely tied to a single IPL team. Pollard played only for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, from 2010 until his final season in 2022, and was part of all five of the franchise's title-winning campaigns.
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| IPL matches | 189 |
| Runs | 3,412 |
| Batting average | 28.67 |
| Strike rate | 147.32 |
| Half-centuries | 16 |
| Wickets | 69 (best 4/44) |
| IPL titles with MI | 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020 |
His big-hitting at the death and handy medium pace made him one of the most valuable all-rounders of the IPL's first decade and a half, and his familiarity with the team culture is a big part of why the franchise has backed him.
Mumbai Indians' Head Coaches Over the Years
- Lalchand Rajput – 2008
- Shaun Pollock – 2009
- Robin Singh – 2010 to 2012
- John Wright – 2013 to 2014 (first IPL title in 2013)
- Ricky Ponting – 2015 to 2016 (title in 2015)
- Mahela Jayawardene – 2017 to 2022, and again 2025 to 2026
- Mark Boucher – 2023 to 2024
- Kieron Pollard – from IPL 2027
Why the Change Matters
Jayawardene oversaw some of Mumbai Indians' greatest seasons during his first stint, but the franchise has not lifted the trophy since 2020. His second spell, which began in 2025, ended with his resignation, and he signed off saying he left "with pride."
For a team built on a winning culture, six seasons without a title is a long gap. Handing the job to Pollard is a bet that someone who knows the dressing room inside out can rebuild that edge quickly, especially as he moves from player-mentor to the man making the final calls.
A Coach Who Knows the Dressing Room
Former players stepping straight into the top job is not new in the IPL, but Pollard's case is unusual because of how long he has been part of the same set-up. He has shared dressing rooms with several of the Indian players who remain the core of the side, and he has watched the franchise's scouting and auction approach from the inside for well over a decade. That continuity is likely to appeal to a management that values stability, even as it looks for fresh energy after Jayawardene's departure.
The flip side is that Pollard will be judged quickly. With the auction only weeks away and expectations at Wankhede always high, the honeymoon period for a new coach at Mumbai Indians tends to be short.
What It Means for MI Fans
Fans can expect a familiar face in the dugout and, possibly, a style of play that leans on power-hitting and aggressive finishing – the qualities that defined Pollard as a player. How quickly he can turn that into results will depend heavily on the auction and on how he manages the senior Indian stars in the squad.
What Happens Next
Pollard's first big task is the retention and auction planning for December 16. Mumbai Indians are also expected to finalise the rest of the coaching and support staff around him in the coming weeks. Once the squad is set, the focus will shift to ending the title drought when IPL 2027 gets under way.
