Young people in Ladakh who dream of becoming doctors may soon not have to leave home to study. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has approved the operationalisation of Ladakh's first Government Medical College in Leh, which will start functioning from the 2027-28 academic year. The decision was announced on October 21, 2026, and is being described by the Union Territory's administration as a long-awaited milestone.

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena called it a historic moment for the region and thanked Union Health Minister JP Nadda for clearing the proposal. The Ladakh Administration says it will now put in place all arrangements needed to welcome the first batch of MBBS students.

Background: A Long-Standing Demand

Ladakh has never had a medical college of its own. Students from Leh and Kargil who clear NEET have had to move to Jammu, Srinagar, Chandigarh or other states, often far from home and at high cost. The shortage has also been felt in hospitals, where retaining doctors in a high-altitude, remote region is a constant challenge.

The breakthrough came after the Lieutenant Governor wrote to the Health Minister on July 13, 2026. In that letter, he sought a one-time relaxation of a rule that requires about 80 per cent of a college's infrastructure to be complete before recruitment of faculty and support staff can begin. The ministry accepted the request, allowing the college to begin with interim facilities instead of waiting for its permanent campus to be finished.

Key Details of the Leh Medical College

According to reports on the approval, the college will start in two newly built buildings, which will serve as the academic block and the students' hostel. Clinical training for the first batch will take place at the existing 200-bed Sonam Norboo Memorial (SNM) Hospital in Leh, which has around 60 experienced doctors.

Recruitment will be carried out against 103 sanctioned regular posts, in phases from 2027-28, depending on the academic requirements identified by the UT Administration. These posts will be filled on a regular basis under the approved recruitment rules. Once the dedicated infrastructure is ready, the college will shift to its permanent campus. The use of interim facilities will follow conditions set by the Department of Expenditure.

What It Means for Students in Ladakh

For NEET aspirants from Leh, Kargil and the wider region, the biggest change is access. Studying medicine close to home cuts living costs and makes it easier for families to support students. It also raises the chances that doctors trained in Ladakh will stay and serve in Ladakh, which matters in a region where people sometimes travel long distances for specialist care.

The seat count and admission details have not yet been announced. Like other government medical colleges, admissions are expected to be based on NEET UG scores through the counselling process, but students should wait for the official notification on seat matrix and any local quota before planning.

What Aspirants Can Do Now

  1. Keep preparing for NEET UG – students targeting the 2027 exam would be in line for the first session.
  2. Track official updates from the Ladakh Administration and the Health Ministry on seats and quotas.
  3. Keep documents ready, including domicile and category certificates, which are usually needed during counselling.

Part of a Wider Push in Ladakh

The medical college is one of several institutional steps for the Union Territory. The Leh Bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh was inaugurated by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on October 18. The Centre has also approved campuses of IIT Jammu and IIM Jammu in Leh, aimed at giving young people technical and professional education without leaving the region.

What Happens Next

The coming months will focus on readying the interim buildings, starting phased faculty recruitment and completing regulatory steps before the first admissions. Students and parents should watch for announcements on seat numbers and the counselling route as the 2027-28 session approaches.
