The countdown to Rajinikanth's biggest release in three years is officially on. Ticket sales for Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, are opening across India this weekend ahead of the film's worldwide release on Wednesday, October 15. Overseas, early bookings have already crossed the USD 1 million mark, according to trade tracker Sacnilk.
The sequel to the 2023 blockbuster Jailer brings back "Tiger" Muthuvel Pandian, and with a festive-week release, IMAX screens and a cast that stretches across four film industries, it is shaping up to be one of the year's biggest box office events.
Advance Booking: Where Things Stand
Trade reports say bookings for major theatres, including in Tamil Nadu, were set to open from 5 pm on Saturday, October 10. In Kerala, where the film is distributed by Sree Gokulam Movies, sales are reported to open on Sunday, October 11 at 10 am, with the first shows scheduled as early as 6 am on release day.
Overseas, the response has been quick. Sacnilk's figures show pre-sales above USD 1 million, with the United States leading the way, followed by markets such as the UAE, the UK, Australia and several European countries. These numbers include premiere shows and have not been officially confirmed by the makers.

The Cast: A Pan-India Line-Up
Rajinikanth returns as retired jailer Muthuvel Pandian, who is pulled back into violence when a fresh threat from the criminal underworld targets his family. Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa reprise their roles from the first film.
The new additions are what have fans talking. S.J. Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty and Suraj Venjaramoodu join the cast, while Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and Kannada star Shiva Rajkumar return in special roles after their much-loved cameos in the first part. Vijay Sethupathi also features.
Music and Crew
Anirudh Ravichander, whose "Hukum" theme became a phenomenon in 2023, scores the sequel. It is his fifth film with Nelson. The technical team includes cinematographer Vijay Kartik Kannan, editor R. Nirmal and production designer D.R.K. Kiran. The first single, "Ala Bolelo", released in August.
A Long Road to Release
Jailer 2 was officially announced with a teaser on Pongal in January 2025. Shooting began in Chennai in March 2025 and moved through Kerala, Coimbatore, Mysuru and Goa before wrapping in 2026. The film was first announced for June 12, 2026, but that date was missed, and the October 15 release was confirmed in July.
The film is also notable for being the first Rajinikanth movie to get a wide IMAX release on this scale, which the makers hope will give it a premium edge in big cities.
What It Means for Moviegoers
- Book early: Opening-day shows in Tamil Nadu and Kerala usually fill up within hours for a Rajinikanth film, especially early-morning fan shows.
- Festive window: The release lands in the middle of the Navratri–Dussehra festive season, which usually brings bigger crowds to theatres.
- Clash watch: It arrives while Ajay Devgn's Drishyam 3 is still drawing audiences in the Hindi market, and as several Telugu and Tamil releases line up for the festive week.
- Kids' entry: With a U/A 16+ certificate, parental guidance is advised for younger viewers.
Why the Hype Is So Big
The first Jailer worked because it mixed Nelson's dark, deadpan humour with Rajinikanth's screen presence and some genuinely crowd-pleasing cameo moments. The sequel appears to double down on that formula. The trailer leans on stylised action, punch dialogues and Mohanlal's more action-heavy appearance, and fans across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka are treating the release as a festival in itself. Rajinikanth also has a reunion film with Kamal Haasan and Nelson lined up next, which has only added to the excitement around his current run.
What Happens Next
Over the next four days, the advance booking numbers from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka will be the clearest guide to how big the opening could be. The original Jailer was one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2023, so trade watchers will compare day-one figures closely. Expect early reviews from overseas premieres to start appearing on release eve.
