Veteran India batter Punam Raut has called time on her international career. The Mumbai-born right-hander, who turned 37 on October 14, announced her retirement from all formats of international cricket in an Instagram post, bringing the curtain down on a journey that began in 2009 and saw her play 112 matches for India.

Raut was one of the quiet pillars of India's top order for over a decade, and she will be remembered most for her role in the 2017 Women's World Cup, the tournament that changed how India watches women's cricket.

Her Farewell Message

"After much thought and reflection, I have decided to retire from international cricket in all formats of the game," Raut wrote. Calling it the greatest honour of her life to represent India, she said the 2017 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup would always remain one of the defining moments of her career. She described that tournament as one that transformed women's cricket in India and inspired a generation of young girls.

She also thanked the Mumbai Cricket Association for believing in her during her formative years.

Career in Numbers

Raut played 4 Tests, 73 ODIs and 35 T20Is between 2009 and 2021, scoring 3,283 international runs. The 50-over format was where she shone brightest, with 2,299 runs at an average of 34.83, including three centuries and 15 half-centuries. In T20Is, she made 719 runs at an average of 27.65 and a strike rate of 92.17, with four fifties.

The 2017 World Cup Run

Raut's finest hour came in England in 2017. She scored a century against Australia in the league stage and then top-scored for India in the final against England at Lord's with a gritty 86. India came agonisingly close to the title before losing a tense finish, but the campaign drew huge television audiences back home and made household names of the squad.

Many of today's young cricketers, and the growth that followed, including the Women's Premier League, trace their inspiration back to that run.

The Record Stand With Deepti Sharma

A few weeks before that World Cup, Raut was part of one of the most remarkable partnerships in ODI history. Against Ireland at Potchefstroom in South Africa in May 2017, she and Deepti Sharma put on 320 runs for the opening wicket. Raut made 109 off 116 balls before retiring hurt, and the stand was the highest opening partnership in men's or women's ODIs at the time.

A Test Hundred to Remember

Raut's Test career did not start well; she was out for a duck on debut. But in only her third Test, against South Africa in Mysore in 2014, she made a composed 130, a rare feat at a time when India played very little women's Test cricket.

She also had a few memorable knocks in T20 World Cups, including an unbeaten 54 against Pakistan in 2009 and 56 off 52 balls against the West Indies in 2014.

A Reliable Top-Order Presence

Raut was never the flashiest batter in the side, but she offered something every team needs: the ability to bat long and absorb pressure. In an era when India often depended on a handful of senior players, her steady starts at the top allowed the stroke-makers around her to play freely. Teammates and fans have often pointed to her patience and temperament as her biggest strengths.

What Her Retirement Means

Raut had not played for India since 2021, as a younger group of batters took over the top order. Her retirement is a formal close to a chapter rather than a change to the current side, but it is a moment to recognise a player who bridged two eras of Indian women's cricket, from the low-profile years to the boom that followed 2017.

She has not yet announced her plans for the future. Like several of her former teammates, she could move into coaching, commentary or administration, but nothing has been confirmed.
