Five matches, two wins each, and one night left to settle it. India and West Indies meet in the fifth and final T20I at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, October 17, with the series locked at 2-2. The match starts at 7 PM IST, and for Shreyas Iyer's India the stakes are higher than usual: a defeat would mean their first home bilateral T20I series loss since February 2019.

Shai Hope's West Indies arrive with momentum after a 24-run win in Hyderabad, while India are sweating over the fitness of left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh.

How the series has swung

This has been one of the most entertaining bilateral series India have played at home in a while, with huge totals and big swings from game to game.

MatchResult
1st T20I, LucknowIndia won by 8 wickets
2nd T20I, RanchiWest Indies won by 6 wickets (chased 250 in 18.3 overs)
3rd T20I, IndoreIndia won by 14 runs
4th T20I, HyderabadWest Indies won by 24 runs (247/3 vs 223)
5th T20I, BengaluruSaturday, October 17, 7 PM IST

The Ranchi chase was a warning sign, as West Indies hunted down India's 249 for 5 with heavy dew making the ball hard to grip. In Hyderabad, Hope went one better, hammering an unbeaten 102 off 50 balls with nine sixes before Keemo Paul's 5 for 41 choked India's reply.

Arshdeep Singh injury: will he play?

The big worry for India is Arshdeep. The left-armer was struck on his left shoulder by a quick delivery from Shamar Joseph in the final over of India's chase in Hyderabad, and the physios had to rush onto the field. Speaking after the match, Sanju Samson said Arshdeep was icing the shoulder and that he hoped the pacer would recover soon.

There has been no official word on his availability. With the New Zealand tour coming up, the team management may not want to risk him if he is not fully fit. If he misses out, India's already stretched pace attack, which leaked plenty in Hyderabad, will need someone else to step up in the death overs.

Team selection debate

The bowling combination is the main talking point. Arshdeep and Mayank Yadav both went for 52 runs in four overs in the fourth T20I, and former players have been asking whether wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav should come back into the XI on a ground where spinners who attack the stumps can still pick up wickets.

With the bat, India look settled. Sanju Samson hit 56 in Hyderabad, Tilak Varma has scores of 43, 28 and 44 not out in recent outings, and Nitish Kumar Reddy showed his hitting power with 41 off 20 balls. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan are capable of giving India a flying start on a small ground.

For West Indies, the core group has done the damage all series. Hope has been the standout batter of the tour, Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford have finished innings brutally, and Keemo Paul and Shamar Joseph have led a bowling attack that held its nerve in Hyderabad.

Chinnaswamy pitch and dew factor

The Chinnaswamy is famous for short boundaries, a fast outfield and high scores, so another 200-plus total would surprise no one. The weather forecast suggests a pleasant evening around 22-23°C, but high humidity means dew could again play a big role in the second innings. That makes the toss important, with captains likely to prefer chasing.

The last T20I at this venue was the India vs Afghanistan thriller in January 2024, when both teams made 212 and India won after a dramatic Super Over finish.

What it means for India

India have not lost a home bilateral T20I series since Australia beat them 2-0 in February 2019, and nobody in the dressing room will want that run to end in Bengaluru. Beyond the record, a series win would give the team valuable confidence before the New Zealand tour and settle some of the selection questions around the bowling unit.

For West Indies, a win would complete a remarkable comeback and cap a tour in which Hope has repeatedly frustrated Indian bowlers.

What happens next

The final playing XIs will be confirmed at the toss on Saturday evening, along with an update on Arshdeep's fitness. After the decider, India's focus shifts to the series against New Zealand.
