Students from economically weaker families who qualified for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) now have a little more time to apply. The Ministry of Education has extended the last date for submitting applications under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the 2026-27 academic year to November 15, 2026. Applications, both fresh and renewal, must be filed on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).
The scholarship is worth Rs 12,000 a year and is paid directly into students' bank accounts, so missing the deadline can mean losing a full year's support.
What has changed
In a release issued through the Press Information Bureau, the ministry said the NSP has been open for NMMSS applications since June 1, 2026, and that the application window has now been extended to November 15. It also set new deadlines for the two rounds of verification that follow a student's application.
As of October 30, the portal had received 90,483 fresh applications and 1,99,531 renewal applications, according to the ministry.

Who is eligible
The NMMS scheme is meant to help bright students from low-income families stay in school after Class 8 and carry on until Class 12. Every year, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded to Class 9 students who clear a selection exam conducted by their state or union territory government. The scholarship is then renewed in Classes 10, 11 and 12, as long as the student meets the academic requirements.
- Students must be studying in a state government school, a government-aided school or a school run by a local body.
- To sit the selection test, a student needs at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in Class 7, with a relaxation of 5 percentage points for SC and ST students.
- Parental income must not be more than Rs 3.5 lakh a year.
How to apply on NSP: step by step
- Complete One-Time Registration (OTR): the ministry has said students must first finish OTR on the National Scholarship Portal before they can apply.
- Log in to NSP: use your OTR details to sign in to the portal.
- Choose the right application: select a fresh application if you qualified in the latest state selection exam, or renewal if you already receive the scholarship.
- Fill in your details: enter school, academic and bank account information carefully. The bank account should be active, as the money is paid through DBT.
- Upload documents and submit: keep your income certificate, marksheet and bank details ready, and submit before November 15.
- Follow up with your school: your school's nodal officer must verify the application by November 30, followed by district-level verification by December 15.
Why it matters for students
For many families, Rs 12,000 a year covers books, uniforms, travel and coaching costs that could otherwise push a child to leave school. Renewal students are especially at risk of missing out, since the scholarship does not continue automatically: it must be renewed on NSP each year. Teachers and parents should check that every eligible student in their school has applied before the new deadline.
Common mistakes to avoid
Every year, a number of applications get stuck at the verification stage because of small errors. A mismatch between the name on the bank account and the name in school records, an inactive bank account, or a wrong income certificate can all hold up payment. Students should double-check spellings, make sure the bank account is in their own name or as allowed under the scheme, and keep a copy of the submitted application. Parents should also avoid paying middlemen to fill in forms, since applying on the National Scholarship Portal is free.
What happens next
Once the application window closes on November 15, schools and district officers will verify the applications in two stages. Only verified applications move ahead for payment, so students should make sure their school completes the first level of verification by November 30. Those who face technical problems on the portal should contact their school's institute nodal officer well before the deadline rather than waiting until the last day.
