Thousands of doctors who earned their medical degrees abroad are just days away from one of the most important tests of their careers. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) will release the FMGE October 2026 admit card on Tuesday, October 27, on its official website natboard.edu.in, and the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination itself will be held on Saturday, October 31.
The exam city intimation slip is already out, so candidates know which city they will travel to. The admit card, which carries the exact centre address and reporting time, is the last piece of the puzzle.
Why the FMGE matters so much
Every year, a large number of Indian students head to countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Bangladesh and China to study MBBS. When they return, they cannot simply start practising. They first have to clear the FMGE, a screening test conducted by NBEMS, before they are eligible for registration with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council.
For many families who have invested heavily in an overseas medical degree, this test decides whether that investment turns into a licence to work in Indian hospitals. That is why the run-up to every session is so tense for candidates and their parents.

How to download the FMGE October 2026 admit card
The process will follow the same route that candidates used for the city slip last week. Once the link goes live on October 27, here is what to do:
- Go to the NBEMS website, natboard.edu.in.
- Open the Examinations section and choose FMGE.
- Click on the application link for the October 2026 session.
- Log in with your user ID or registration number and password.
- Click on the admit card link once it is activated.
- Check your name, photograph, roll number, centre address and reporting time carefully.
- Download the admit card and take a clear colour or black-and-white printout on A4 paper.
If anything on the admit card looks wrong, such as a spelling mistake in your name or a mismatched photograph, contact the NBEMS helpdesk immediately. Do not wait until exam day, because centre staff will go strictly by what is printed on the card.
City slip vs admit card: what is the difference?
A lot of candidates confuse the two documents. The city intimation slip, released on October 20, only tells you which city your exam centre is in. It is meant to give you time to book train or bus tickets and arrange a stay if the city is far from home. It is not valid for entry.
The admit card is the actual entry pass. It mentions the exact venue, the reporting time and the gate-closing time. Without a printed copy of it and an original photo ID, you will not be allowed inside the exam hall.
Exam day checklist
- Printed admit card: A soft copy on your phone will not work. Keep a spare printout.
- Original photo ID: Carry the same ID that you mentioned while applying, such as Aadhaar, passport, PAN card, voter ID or driving licence.
- Reach early: Plan to be at the centre well before the reporting time printed on your admit card. Security checks and biometric verification take time.
- Leave gadgets behind: Mobile phones, smartwatches, calculators and other electronic items are not allowed inside.
- Read the instructions: The second page of the admit card usually lists centre rules. Read it the night before.
What the paper looks like
FMGE is a computer-based test. In recent sessions it has been a 300-question multiple-choice paper split into two parts, and candidates need at least 150 marks out of 300 to qualify, with no negative marking. Students should still check the official information bulletin for the October 2026 session for the final pattern and timing of each part.
Teachers who coach FMGE aspirants usually advise candidates to spend the last few days on revision rather than new topics. High-yield subjects such as medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and community medicine carry a big share of questions, and the clinical subjects decide many results.
What it means for candidates in India
For foreign medical graduates, clearing the October session means they can move on to their compulsory internship in India and, after that, permanent registration. Those who do not clear it will have to wait for the next session, which adds months to an already long journey. Every extra attempt also means more months of coaching fees and lost earning time, so most candidates are keen to finish the licensing step at the first go.
What happens next
After the October 31 exam, NBEMS will publish the results on natboard.edu.in. Qualified candidates will then be able to download their pass certificates and apply for registration. Keep checking the official website for notices, because any change in the reporting time or venue will be announced there first.
