Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d'Or, beating Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal to football's most famous individual prize at a ceremony at the London Palladium on Monday night. The Bayern Munich striker and England captain is the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001.

For a player who spent years being told he would never win the big trophies, it was a night that turned the narrative on its head. Kane collected the golden ball in his home city, from two-time winner Ronaldo Nazário, after a season in which he scored 73 goals for club and country.

A season of goals and, finally, trophies

Kane's 2025-26 campaign was relentless. He scored 36 Bundesliga goals as Bayern won a 35th German league title, and added 14 goals in 13 Champions League matches as the Bavarians reached the semi-finals. He then completed a domestic double by winning the DFB-Pokal, scoring in every round and finishing with a hat-trick in the final against Stuttgart under coach Vincent Kompany.

Then came the World Cup in North America, where Kane scored six goals and led England to the semi-finals. England went on to finish third, their best showing at a World Cup since winning the tournament in 1966.

"Wow, I'm almost speechless," Kane said on stage, calling the moment "beyond my wildest dreams". He also had a message for young fans: "It's just the journey. For any young boy or girl who wants to achieve their dream, anything is possible."

Elite company

Kane becomes only the fifth Englishman to win the Ballon d'Or, after Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen. He is also the first player from a Bundesliga club to win since Matthias Sammer in 1996, and he also took home the Striker of the Year award.

Other winners on the night

Alexia Putellas won the women's Ballon d'Or for the third time. Lamine Yamal was named the best young player in the men's game, and Vicky López took the women's young talent award. Spain's Luis de la Fuente was named men's coach of the year, Unai Simón won the men's goalkeeper award, and Paris Saint-Germain took the men's club of the year honour, with Barcelona winning on the women's side. England winger Bukayo Saka received the Sócrates Award for his work off the pitch.

Mbappé, who finished second, also had a historic year: he became the all-time top scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals, including 10 at the 2026 tournament.

A ceremony with a twist

The night was not without drama. Hours before the ceremony, the official Ballon d'Or website briefly published articles naming each of the three finalists, Kane, Yamal and Mbappé, as the winner. All three were taken down. The event, organised by France Football and decided by a jury of 100 journalists from the top 100 FIFA-ranked nations, then started late because of London traffic.

Why Indian fans care

Football's following in India has grown rapidly, and Premier League and Champions League stars enjoy huge fan bases across Kerala, West Bengal, Goa and the North-East. Kane's long years at Tottenham made him a familiar face to Indian viewers of English football, and his move to Bayern turned many of those fans towards the Bundesliga. His win is also a reminder that persistence pays: he collected his first major team trophies only after leaving England, in his 30s.

What happens next

Kane returns to Bayern Munich duty as the champions defend their Bundesliga title and chase European glory again. With a Ballon d'Or now on his shelf, the one big prize missing from his collection is the Champions League, and Bayern's run this season will be followed closely by fans around the world, including in India.
