India has landed one of the biggest events in Olympic weightlifting. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has awarded Ahmedabad the 2029 senior World Weightlifting Championships, the first time the country will host the sport's top event outside the Olympics. The decision was taken at the IWF Executive Board meeting in Ningbo, China, on Sunday, October 25, with India's bid beating competition from Russia and Venezuela.

The championships will also serve as a qualifying event for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which Ahmedabad is set to host a year later.

What the IWF Decided

The IWF handed out four championships in one go to fix its calendar for the coming years. Apart from Ahmedabad's 2029 senior worlds, Moscow was named host of the 2030 senior World Championships, Prishtina in Kosovo got the 2028 World Youth Championships and Caracas in Venezuela will stage the 2028 World Junior Championships.

IWF General Secretary Jose Quinones said the bids were excellent and wished the hosts success, adding that three of the four countries would be organising an IWF world event for the first time. India is one of those three.

"A Big Day for Indian Weightlifting"

Weightlifting Federation of India president Sahdev Yadav called it "a big day for Indian weightlifting", saying the IWF Executive Board "has put faith in India". He also pointed to the sporting upside, saying the event "will give our weightlifters a good opportunity to win berths for the 2030 CWG".

The vote of confidence did not come out of nowhere. Gujarat has steadily built a track record in the sport, with Gandhinagar hosting the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships and the state staging the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships. Running those events smoothly gave India's bid credibility with the world body.

India's History at the World Championships

India has won 18 medals at the senior World Weightlifting Championships so far: three gold, 10 silver and five bronze. A few milestones stand out:

  1. 1989: Kunjarani Devi became India's first medallist, winning silver in the women's 44kg category.
  2. 1994 and 1995: Karnam Malleswari won back-to-back world titles, years before her Olympic bronze in Sydney.
  3. 2017: Mirabai Chanu became world champion in the women's 48kg category, a win that set up her rise to Olympic silver in Tokyo.

Lifting in front of a home crowd could add a few more names to that list. Home advantage in weightlifting is not just about support from the stands; it also means no long-haul travel, familiar food and less disruption to weight management in the days before competition.

What It Means for Ahmedabad and Indian Sport

For Ahmedabad, the 2029 worlds fit neatly into a bigger plan. The city is preparing for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and is also the proposed host city if India wins its bid for the 2036 Olympics. Staging a full world championship with athletes from across the globe will be a valuable test of venues, anti-doping systems, logistics and volunteers.

There is a grassroots angle too. A world championship on home soil gives young lifters in academies across Manipur, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra and other states a chance to watch the best in the world up close, and gives coaches and technical officials valuable exposure to top-level competition. Federations often see a jump in interest and sponsorship when a marquee event comes home, and Indian weightlifting will hope for the same.

The decision also adds to a growing list of world-level events coming to India's newest sporting hub. Each one strengthens the argument that the country can deliver large, multi-nation competitions on time and to international standards.

What Happens Next

Exact dates and the competition venue for the 2029 championships are yet to be announced. The Weightlifting Federation of India and Gujarat authorities will now work with the IWF on the hosting agreement, while Indian lifters have a clear target: peak in Ahmedabad in 2029, qualify for the Commonwealth Games, and build towards the next Olympic cycle.
