The IPL 2027 player auction is set to be held in Goa on December 16, with franchises told to submit their retention lists by November 15, according to multiple reports. It will be a one-day mini-auction, and the last one before a full mega auction ahead of the 2028 season.

For the ten franchises, the clock is now ticking. Over the next three weeks they must decide which players to keep, which to release, and how much money they want to carry into the auction room to fill the gaps in their squads for the league's 20th season.

Date, venue and deadline

The auction date and venue were first reported by ESPNcricinfo and carried by several outlets. The Indian Premier League has communicated the November 15 retention deadline to the franchises, though the BCCI has not yet formally announced the auction schedule. Interestingly, auction day clashes with India's second ODI against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru, so some India players and support staff will be busy on the field while their franchises bid.

How the process will work

  1. Retentions by November 15: Each franchise submits the list of players it is keeping. Released players go back into the pool.
  2. Player registrations: Once retentions are in, the IPL circulates the list of registered players to teams so they can draw up shortlists.
  3. Final auction list: The final list of players and the order of the sets are expected to be shared in the week before the auction.
  4. Auction day, December 16: Teams bid for players set by set in Goa.
  5. Trade window reopens: After the auction, trading resumes and stays open until a month before the new season starts.

Trades so far: Pant to Delhi, Kuldeep to Lucknow

The trade window has already produced one blockbuster. In June, Lucknow Super Giants sent captain Rishabh Pant back to Delhi Capitals in exchange for wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Delhi have also traded left-arm pacer T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad for uncapped leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari. With the window open until a week before the auction, more deals could follow as teams sort out their combinations.

Coaching changes add another layer

Franchises are also reshaping their backroom staff. Mumbai Indians, for example, have named Kieron Pollard as head coach for 2027. New coaches often bring new ideas about which players to retain, which could make this retention round more interesting than a usual mini-auction year.

Mini-auction vs mega auction: the difference

In a mega auction, franchises can keep only a handful of players and most of the league's stars go back into the pool, which means squads are largely rebuilt from scratch. A mini-auction works the other way round. Teams keep the bulk of their squads, release a few players who did not fit, and use their remaining purse to fill specific gaps, such as a death-overs bowler, a backup wicketkeeper or an overseas finisher.

That is why retention lists matter so much this year. Every player released frees up money, but also leaves a hole that must be filled in a smaller, more competitive pool on December 16. Teams that plan well can land bargains; those that release too many key names risk overpaying to replace them.

What it means for fans

Mini-auctions are usually about plugging holes rather than rebuilding, but they can still produce big-money surprises, especially for overseas fast bowlers and all-rounders. For fans, November 15 is the first date to watch: the retention lists will reveal which stars are staying with their teams and who might be up for grabs in Goa.

Because a mega auction is due before 2028, franchises also have to think two seasons ahead. Some may prefer short-term signings for 2027, while others may invest in young Indian talent they hope to build around.

What happens next

The IPL 2027 season dates are not yet final. The IPL's earlier outline had pencilled in March 14 to May 30, 2027, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia indicated after the board's September AGM that the season could begin towards the end of March. The board is also yet to issue the tender for the next media rights cycle, which begins with the 2028 season. Royal Challengers Bengaluru go into the new season as defending champions after beating Gujarat Titans in the 2026 final in Ahmedabad.
