Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has become the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, crossing Rs 700 crore at the worldwide box office in just 11 days. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the Nelson Dilipkumar action drama had grossed about Rs 710.35 crore worldwide by Sunday, October 25, overtaking the Rs 691 crore lifetime haul of Rajinikanth's own 2.0.

That record had stood for about eight years. Breaking it took a sequel to one of the superstar's biggest hits, a packed ensemble cast and a festive-season release that kept cinema halls full across the South and beyond.

How Jailer 2 got here

Produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 opened in theatres on October 15 with an India net collection of about Rs 59.70 crore on day one. It held strong through its first week, with Rs 55.85 crore on its first Saturday, and crossed Rs 500 crore worldwide by day six and Rs 600 crore by day eight, passing Vijay's Leo and the original Jailer along the way.

Business dipped on weekdays in the second week, as it does for most films, before picking up again on the second weekend. On day 11 (Sunday), the film added about Rs 25.70 crore net in India.

  • Fastest Tamil film to Rs 300 crore and Rs 400 crore worldwide

How Jailer 2 compares with other Tamil blockbusters

Jailer 2 (2026)About Rs 710 crore in 11 days (and counting)
2.0 (2018)About Rs 691 crore lifetime
Leo (2023)About Rs 605 crore lifetime
Jailer (2023)About Rs 604 crore lifetime

Rajinikanth now holds three of these four spots. More striking is the speed: Jailer 2 passed the lifetime totals of Leo and the first Jailer in a little over a week, and needed only 11 days to beat a record that 2.0 built over its entire theatrical run.

The star power behind the numbers

Nelson's sequel brings back Rajinikanth as the fearsome retired jailer, with Ramya Krishnan returning and Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar back in key roles. The film also packs in a long list of names from across Indian cinema, including Vidya Balan, S.J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty and Vijay Sethupathi and Hrithik Roshan. That pan-India cast has helped the film travel well beyond Tamil Nadu.

What it means for Tamil cinema

For years, the Rs 700 crore mark was out of reach for Kollywood even as Telugu and Hindi films crossed Rs 1,000 crore. Jailer 2 changes that conversation. It shows that a Tamil star vehicle, released at the right time with wide distribution, can compete with the biggest pan-India hits. Trade watchers will now look at whether the film can push into the Rs 400 crore net club in India and how far its worldwide total can climb.

What happens next

The film's third week will decide its final standing. Jailer 2 is expected to keep adding to its total, though at a slower pace than in its first two weeks. Its eventual OTT release, typically a few weeks after a theatrical run, will be the next big talking point for fans.
