Jay-Z is finally taking the biggest stage in American music himself. The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced on Monday, October 26 (US time), that the rapper and mogul will headline the Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show on Sunday, February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. For Indian fans, that means the show will land on the morning of Monday, February 15.

The announcement was made during the Dallas Cowboys–Philadelphia Eagles Monday Night Football game on ESPN, and it ends years of speculation about whether the man who has helped choose halftime performers since 2019 would ever perform at one.

Why the Jay-Z Super Bowl halftime show is a big deal

Since 2019, Jay-Z's company Roc Nation has partnered with the NFL to advise on and produce its live entertainment, including the halftime show. In that time it has put Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, The Weeknd, Rihanna, Usher, Kendrick Lamar and Bad Bunny on the field, as well as the Dr Dre-led hip-hop show at SoFi Stadium in 2022.

Jay-Z had always played down the idea of doing it himself. Back in 2019, he said that performing at the Super Bowl would effectively end that conversation. According to ESPN, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell kept the door open, asking that Jay-Z take the stage "whenever the moment felt right to him". The moment, it seems, has arrived. In his statement, Jay-Z described the booking as a journey from his debut album to the Super Bowl stage and called it a dream come true after 30 years in music.

A victory lap after a 30-year milestone

The timing is not accidental. Jay-Z has just wrapped a 30th-anniversary run for Reasonable Doubt, his 1996 debut album, which also marked 25 years of The Blueprint. The tour included three sold-out nights at Yankee Stadium in New York, sold-out shows in London and Paris, and two concerts at SoFi Stadium on October 23 and 24, the same venue where he will now headline the Super Bowl. Those Los Angeles shows featured guests including his daughter Blue Ivy Carter, John Legend, DJ Khaled, Too Short, Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg.

Jay-Z's career in numbers

Born Shawn Carter in Brooklyn, Jay-Z is one of the most decorated artists of his generation. He has won 25 Grammy Awards from 89 nominations, second only to his wife Beyoncé. He co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records, launched Roc Nation in 2008, became the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017 and entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. He is also a four-time Emmy winner, and Reasonable Doubt was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame last year.

The bar set by Bad Bunny

Jay-Z follows a hugely watched act. Bad Bunny's halftime show in February 2026 averaged 128.2 million viewers, the fourth-highest in the show's history behind Kendrick Lamar in 2025, Michael Jackson in 1993 and Usher in 2024. It also went on to win a record seven Emmy Awards. Expectations for Jay-Z's set, which will be his first as a halftime headliner, will be just as high.

The family angle is also hard to ignore. Beyoncé has played the Super Bowl twice, headlining in 2013 and appearing as a special guest in 2016. Fans have already started guessing whether she, or the guests from his recent SoFi shows, might join him in Inglewood. Nothing has been announced on that front.

What it means for fans in India

Hip-hop has exploded in India over the past decade, and Jay-Z's catalogue, from "Empire State of Mind" to "99 Problems", is familiar to a generation of listeners who grew up on streaming. The halftime show is typically one of the most-watched music performances of the year worldwide, and clips usually flood Indian social media within minutes. Official broadcast and streaming details for India are usually confirmed closer to the game, so keep an eye on the NFL's and Apple Music's announcements.

What happens next

The NFL and Roc Nation typically reveal more about the show, including any guest performers, in the weeks leading up to the game. The teams that will contest Super Bowl LXI will be decided in the NFL playoffs in January. Until then, the only confirmed name on the field at halftime is Jay-Z.
