November 1 is shaping up as a day of rival shows of strength. The Congress-led INDIA bloc will hold its "Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao" rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan against the Election Commission, and the BJP is now planning a nationwide counter-campaign of padyatras starting the very same day, according to party sources quoted by several outlets on October 26.

The face-off sets the tone for a heated month in national politics, with the electoral roll revision at its centre and several states heading to Assembly polls next year.

What the BJP Is Planning

According to party sources, the BJP will hold synchronised foot marches, public meetings and outreach programmes across the country from November 1, under a campaign reported to be titled "Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy". Top Union ministers and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states are expected to lead the events.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to join a padyatra in Hyderabad on November 2 and another in Karnal, Haryana, on November 5. BJP national president Nitin Nabin is expected to take part in some events, and Union ministers J.P. Nadda and Rajnath Singh, along with chief ministers Yogi Adityanath and Devendra Fadnavis, have also been named among the leaders who will head the campaign.

There is no fixed end date. Sources said the campaign could run for about a month, through the Diwali and Chhath season, and will be built around leaders' existing schedules. States heading to Assembly elections, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa, are expected to see special focus. The BJP describes the opposition's campaign as a "false and misleading narrative".

The INDIA Bloc's Rally

The opposition rally is aimed at the Election Commission of India over alleged irregularities in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which the opposition has framed as "vote chori". Opposition leaders have demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and Rahul Gandhi has said the protest will continue until he is removed. Delhi Police has issued a no-objection certificate for security and traffic arrangements for the venue from October 25 to November 3.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has already called the party's MPs to Delhi for the rally.

Row Over the Date and Timing

The BJP has questioned the choice of November 1, pointing out that it is the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh violence in Delhi. Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad accused Rahul Gandhi of insensitivity and said the rally would hurt Sikh sentiments.

Traders have raised a different concern. The Chamber of Trade and Industry wrote to Kharge and Rahul Gandhi asking them to postpone the rally until after November 10, saying a large gathering in the middle of the Dhanteras and Diwali shopping season could disrupt business worth crores. Kharge acknowledged the request and said a final decision would be taken only after consulting Congress and INDIA bloc allies. Union minister Giriraj Singh said there is a right to protest in a democracy, while maintaining that the government would act in the public interest.

What It Means for Voters

At the heart of the fight is the SIR exercise, which decides who stays on the voter list. The opposition says genuine voters are being dropped; the BJP calls the charge a false narrative. For ordinary citizens, the practical takeaway is to check that their name is on the electoral roll for their constituency and to raise any problems with their booth-level officer during the revision period.

For Delhi residents, a big rally at Ramlila Maidan means likely traffic diversions in central Delhi on November 1, so watch for Delhi Traffic Police advisories closer to the date.

What Happens Next

All eyes are on whether the INDIA bloc sticks to November 1 or shifts the date after the traders' appeal. The BJP's official announcement of its padyatra schedule is expected in the coming days. Either way, the battle over the voter list looks set to dominate political debate through the festive season.
