India have already wrapped up the T20I series in New Zealand, but Sunday's fifth and final match at Seddon Park, Hamilton, suddenly carries real weight. After New Zealand thrashed them by 87 runs at Eden Park on Friday, Shreyas Iyer's side will want to finish the tour's white-ball opener with a 4-1 scoreline rather than limp into the ODIs. The match starts at 8 pm local time, which is 12:30 pm IST, on November 1.

How the Series Has Gone

India won the first three matches to take an unbeatable 3-0 lead, with Abhishek Sharma's 113 in Wellington sealing the series. New Zealand finally hit back in Auckland, and they did it in style. Glenn Phillips smashed 107 off just 49 balls with 10 sixes, Michael Bracewell added a blistering 65 off 25, and the hosts piled up 259 for 7, their highest-ever T20I total and the highest by any team against India.

India's chase never got going. Jacob Duffy removed Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan in the very first over and finished with 4 for 23. Tilak Varma top-scored with 35 as India were held to 172 for 9.

Players to Watch

Glenn Phillips

Phillips is having the series of his life. His Eden Park hundred was his third in T20Is and took him to 276 runs in four matches, the most by any batter in a T20I series against India. He now has 592 runs against India in the format, more than anyone else in India-New Zealand T20I history. Stopping him early is India's biggest job on Sunday.

Arshdeep Singh

Even on a tough night, Arshdeep made history. By dismissing Santner, he reached 40 T20I wickets in 2026, the most by any bowler in a calendar year. He also became the fastest pacer to 150 T20I wickets in terms of balls bowled. His death-over control will be vital on a ground known for short boundaries.

India's Top Order

Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan all fell cheaply in Auckland. With Kishan back in the XI in place of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the fourth match, the selection of the top three will be one of the key calls for the team management.

Conditions in Hamilton

Seddon Park is one of New Zealand's most familiar grounds for Indian fans, with a grassy embankment around the field and relatively short square boundaries that reward clean hitting. Evening starts in New Zealand's spring can bring a chill and some dew later on, so the side winning the toss may again prefer to chase, as Iyer chose to do in Auckland. After 259 was scored at Eden Park, India's bowlers will want a clearer plan for the final five overs, when Phillips and Bracewell did most of the damage.

Squads

India: Shreyas Iyer (c), Tilak Varma (vc), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (wk), Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav.

New Zealand: Mitchell Santner (c), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Bevon Jacobs, Kyle Jamieson, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Tim Seifert, Nathan Smith, Josh Clarkson, Blair Tickner. Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes were ruled out of the series before it began.

What It Means for India

A win would give India a 4-1 margin and important momentum before a long tour that still has five ODIs and two Tests to come. A second straight defeat, on the other hand, would raise questions about the bowling plans against New Zealand's power hitters, especially after conceding 259 in Auckland. It is also one more chance for fringe players to stake a claim in a young, experimental T20 squad.

What Comes Next

The ODI series starts on Wednesday, November 4, at Eden Park, Auckland, followed by matches in Wellington, Hamilton and two at Bay Oval, Tauranga. The two Tests are scheduled from November 19 in Wellington and November 27 in Christchurch.
