Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been handed his biggest leadership job yet. The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) on Friday, November 6, named the 15-year-old batter captain of the state's 17-member squad for the opening two matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2026. Suraj Kashyap will be his deputy, and Bihar begin their campaign against Saurashtra in Indore on November 14.

For a player who has spent the past year rewriting age records, it is another milestone: this is the first time he will lead Bihar's senior side.

Why Bihar Turned to Sooryavanshi

The appointment follows a remarkable 2026 for the left-handed opener. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, he finished as the top run-scorer of IPL 2026 with 776 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of over 237. That form carried him into the India T20I side, where he has already played 10 matches, and he has also been vice-captain of Bihar in the Ranji Trophy.

Most recently, he opened with Abhishek Sharma in the third T20I against New Zealand and hammered 45 off just 19 balls during a 133-run opening stand.

BCA president Harsh Vardhan said Vaibhav has shown tremendous talent, confidence and maturity at a young age, and that the captaincy gives him another chance to grow as a leader. He added that the association hopes the team delivers a disciplined and competitive performance under him.

A Tough Group for Bihar

Bihar have landed in Group B alongside Delhi, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Railways, Saurashtra and three-time champions Tamil Nadu. It is a group full of white-ball experience, and Bihar will need early wins to stay in the race for the knockouts. The first two games, against Saurashtra and Railways, will give a clear sense of how the young captain handles field placings, bowling changes and pressure moments.

From Record-Breaker to Leader

Sooryavanshi's rise has been unusually quick. He first played the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as a 13-year-old in 2024, and since then he has gone from a curiosity in domestic cricket to a regular name in India's T20 plans. Leading Bihar now asks something different of him. Instead of focusing only on his own innings, he will be setting fields, managing bowlers and making calls in tight finishes, often alongside team-mates who are much older than him. How he balances that with his natural attacking game will be one of the more interesting subplots of this domestic season.

What It Means for Indian Cricket

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is India's premier domestic T20 competition, and it is closely watched by IPL franchises and national selectors. Leading a side at this level adds a new layer to Sooryavanshi's game. Captaincy can sharpen a young batter's reading of the match, but it also brings extra pressure, and fans will be keen to see whether his explosive batting continues alongside the new responsibility.

For Bihar, a state that has only recently returned to the domestic mainstream, having one of India's most talked-about young players as captain is also a big boost in visibility.

What Happens Next

Bihar open against Saurashtra on November 14 and face Railways on November 16. After those two games, the BCA will review the fitness of Mahour and Hussain and finalise the squad and leadership for the rest of the league stage. The tournament runs until December 6.
