Suriya's much-awaited crime comedy Scene hits theatres worldwide on Friday, 6 November, and it arrives with two big talking points. Advance booking for day one has crossed Rs 9 crore in India, according to trade trackers, and it is among the first Tamil films to benefit from Tamil Nadu's new rule allowing shows from 6 AM.
Directed by Jithu Madhavan and co-starring Nazriya Nazim and Naslen, Scene releases in Tamil along with a Telugu version over the Diwali festive weekend.
Scene advance booking: the numbers so far
According to tracker Sacnilk, Scene had grossed about Rs 9.02 crore in India from day one advance sales (including block seats) as of 12:20 pm on 5 November. That came from around 5.2 lakh tickets across 5,315 shows. Without block seats, the figure stood at roughly Rs 8.09 crore.
Koimoi reported that pre-sales were close to Rs 9 crore and expected to cross Rs 10 crore before the first show. Kerala is a strong market for the film, with day one pre-sales there crossing Rs 2 crore within about a day of bookings opening, as per tracker data reported by FilmiBeat.

Tamil Nadu brings back 6 AM shows
The other big story around Scene is timing. On 3 November, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's government amended the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, allowing theatres to run up to six shows a day for new Tamil releases, between 6 AM and 2:30 AM the next day, for one week from release. Until now, the state allowed four shows a day with the first show at 9 AM.
Early morning shows had been stopped after a fan died outside a Chennai theatre during release celebrations in January 2023. Producers' bodies and theatre owners' associations had been asking for the rule to be relaxed. The Tamil Film Active Producers Association welcomed the order, saying Tamil films had been losing out to Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where Tamil releases already start at 6 AM.
Scene and Nayanthara's Mookuthi Amman 2 are the first major films to benefit. Whether a theatre actually runs a 6 AM show is up to each exhibitor.
What is Scene about?
Suriya plays a police officer named Inbaraj in this crime comedy, while Nazriya Nazim plays Maya, his house help. The film marks Nazriya's return to Tamil cinema after a long gap and her first film with Suriya. Malayalam star Naslen plays the antagonist. Anandaraj, Lal and John Vijay are part of the supporting cast.
Director Jithu Madhavan, known for the Malayalam hit Aavesham, makes his Tamil debut, and composer Sushin Shyam also scores his first Tamil film. Suriya has said in interviews that he asked Nazriya three times before she agreed to do a project with him.
Can Scene be Suriya's biggest opener?
As per Koimoi, Suriya's biggest net openings in India so far are Kanguva at around Rs 24 crore and Retro at around Rs 19.25 crore. Trade watchers feel a strong Diwali weekend, the extra early shows in Tamil Nadu and good buzz in Kerala could push Scene into that range, but that will depend on word of mouth after the first shows.
