The opposition's much-talked-about "public impeachment" of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar did not happen on Friday – not because of the police, but because of the weather. Steady rain in New Delhi forced the INDIA bloc to postpone the event planned at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence to Saturday, October 31. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi said the decision was taken by consensus so that senior leaders would not have to sit out in the rain.

Why the Event Was Postponed

The programme was scheduled for 3:30 pm on October 30 at 10, Rajaji Marg, Kharge's official residence. As leaders gathered for a preparatory meeting, the rain refused to let up. Speaking to reporters, Rahul Gandhi said, "We felt that it would be uncomfortable for seniors to sit in the rain." Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also posted on X that "incessant rain" had forced the change, and that the event would now be held on Saturday afternoon.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is expected to chair the proceedings. According to the plan shared earlier, Kharge will move the symbolic "motion" against the CEC and Rahul Gandhi will deliver the concluding remarks, with roughly one speaker from each alliance party.

Who Was at the Meeting

Friday's meeting at Kharge's home saw a wide turnout from the alliance. Apart from Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, those present included Jairam Ramesh, K C Venugopal, TMC's Derek O'Brien and Mahua Moitra, Samajwadi Party's Dharmendra Yadav, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Arvind Sawant, CPI(M)'s John Brittas, CPI's P Sandosh Kumar, RJD's Sanjay Yadav and RSP's N K Premachandran. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Pawan Khera were also seen arriving.

Derek O'Brien joined Rahul Gandhi at a joint press interaction, a signal that the Trinamool Congress is firmly on board for this campaign.

What the Opposition Is Alleging

The protest is centred on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which opposition parties say has led to large-scale removal of genuine voters – an issue they have branded "vote chori". The alliance has demanded the CEC's resignation. Jairam Ramesh has accused Gyanesh Kumar of violating "the letter and spirit of the Constitution".

Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the CEC of damaging Indian democracy, and alleged that efforts were being made to stop people from states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar from reaching Delhi for the rally. "This is not multiple protests. This is one protest," he said, adding that the opposition was defending "the Constitution" and "the vote". SP's Dharmendra Yadav went further, alleging manipulation in everything from EVMs to voter lists.

These remain political allegations. There was no immediate response from the Election Commission to Friday's remarks.

Is This a Real Impeachment?

No. The "public impeachment" is a symbolic political event, not a constitutional process. Under the Constitution, the Chief Election Commissioner can be removed only in the same manner as a Supreme Court judge – through a motion passed by a special majority in both Houses of Parliament. The opposition does not have the numbers for that, so this programme is meant to build public pressure and keep the SIR issue in the headlines.

What It Means for Voters

For ordinary voters, the dispute matters because the SIR exercise decides whose name appears on the electoral roll. If you are worried about your own entry, the safest step is to check your name on the Election Commission's voter portal or with your local Booth Level Officer, and to file a claim if it is missing. Political battles aside, your vote depends on that entry being correct.

What Happens Next

The opposition now has two back-to-back events. The rescheduled "public impeachment" will be held on Saturday, followed by the "Chalo Dilli" march to Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, November 1. Rahul Gandhi said the rally would be open to opposition supporters, civil society members and journalists. The BJP, for its part, has announced its own padyatras on the same day, which means the national capital is set for a politically charged weekend.
