Defending champions India are through to the semi-finals of the Men's Asian Champions Trophy 2026 with two group games to spare. Harmanpreet Singh's side beat Japan 4-1 at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar on Friday, October 30, for a third straight win, with forward Abhishek scoring twice on the night he played his 150th international match.

How the match unfolded

India started on the front foot and took the lead in the 11th minute through Abhishek. Japan, who had come into the game with two wins of their own, hit back four minutes later when Shota Yamada converted a penalty stroke in the 15th minute. That left the score at 1-1 at half-time and gave the home crowd a few anxious moments.

The game turned in the final quarter of an hour. Captain Harmanpreet Singh restored India's lead in the 47th minute with a trademark drag-flick from a penalty corner, his fifth goal of the tournament, all of them from set pieces. Abhishek then added his second in the 51st minute, and Vishnu Kant Singh, brought into the side for this game, sealed the result in the 56th minute.

Abhishek was named Player of the Match, a fitting way to mark his 150th cap for India.

Changes in the line-up

Chief coach Craig Fulton used the game to rotate his squad. Vishnu Kant Singh and Angad Bir Singh came into the side, while experienced forward Mandeep Singh and midfielder Nilakanta Sharma were rested. The changes did not disturb India's rhythm, and Vishnu Kant's goal will give the coaching staff more options going into the knockout stage.

India's campaign so far

India have looked in commanding form on home turf. They opened with a 13-0 thrashing of Bangladesh, beat China 5-2 and have now got past Japan. The three wins have given them nine points and a goal difference of +19.

Points table after three rounds

  1. India – 9 points (GD +19)
  2. Malaysia – 9 points (GD +8)
  3. Japan – 6 points
  4. South Korea – 3 points
  5. China and Bangladesh – 0 points

In Friday's other matches, Malaysia hammered Bangladesh 6-1 and South Korea edged China 2-1.

Why it matters

The Asian Champions Trophy brings together the continent's top six men's teams, and India are the most successful side in its history with five titles, including the 2024 crown won with a 1-0 win over China in the final. Playing at home in Punjab, the heartland of Indian hockey, the team is chasing a sixth title. For Fulton's side, the tournament is also a valuable stretch of competitive matches as it builds towards bigger targets, including the Olympic cycle for Los Angeles 2028.

The penalty corner battery remains India's biggest weapon. Harmanpreet's five goals from set pieces in three matches show how dangerous the captain is, but the field goals from Abhishek and Vishnu Kant against a disciplined Japanese defence will please the coaching staff just as much.

Malaysia the real test

Malaysia have matched India result for result so far, also winning all three of their games, and their 6-1 win over Bangladesh on Friday showed their attacking threat. India's superior goal difference keeps them on top for now, but Sunday's meeting is the closest thing to a final the group stage will offer. For the home side, it is a chance to test their defensive structure against a quick, counter-attacking team before the pressure of knockout hockey arrives.

What happens next

India's next game is against Malaysia on Sunday, November 1, at 7 pm IST in Jalandhar, a clash between the only two unbeaten teams that is likely to decide who finishes top of the table. With the semi-final spot already secured, India can use the remaining group games to fine-tune combinations before the knockouts.
