For decades, people in Sidhi had to travel to Rewa or beyond just to catch a train. That changed on Saturday, October 24, when Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav opened two new rail sections in the Vindhya region at Churhat railway station, bringing Sidhi district onto India's rail network for the first time since Independence.
The two new sections
The newly opened stretches add 118 km of track. The 65 km Rewa-Churhat section strengthens the link between the Rewa and Sidhi regions, while the 53 km Satna-Devendra Nagar section improves connectivity for Satna, Nagod, Devendra Nagar and surrounding areas. A new passenger service between Devendra Nagar and Churhat was also flagged off at the event.
Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla and Rewa MP Janardan Mishra were among those present at the ceremony.
A tough route to build
The Rewa-Churhat line cuts through rugged, hilly terrain. Building it required a 3.33 km tunnel and several bridges. For local residents, the sight of a train running through these hills is the result of a very long wait.

Part of the Lalitpur-Singrauli project
Both sections belong to the larger Lalitpur-Singrauli New Rail Line Project, one of the most important rail works for the Vindhya belt. Once complete, the corridor will connect Panna, Satna, Rewa, Sidhi and Singrauli, a region rich in minerals and home to major power and industrial units around Singrauli.
The Railway Ministry says the new links will help both passengers and freight. Better rail access to mineral-rich areas means coal, cement and other goods can move to industrial hubs more cheaply, and that in turn is expected to create opportunities in industry, trade and employment.
Madhya Pradesh's bigger rail push
The opening comes as Madhya Pradesh receives a record railway allocation. The state has been given Rs 15,188 crore for railway development in 2026-27, and rail projects worth about Rs 1,18,379 crore are currently under way across the state, covering new lines, doubling, electrification and station upgrades.
What it means for people in the region
For Sidhi, the change is more than symbolic. Until now, students heading to colleges in Rewa or Satna, workers commuting to jobs, and traders moving goods depended almost entirely on roads. A rail link offers a cheaper and often safer alternative, especially for long-distance travel.
The Devendra Nagar-Churhat train gives residents a new option for daily travel, and officials expect it to benefit students, employees and small traders in particular. Over time, as the Lalitpur-Singrauli line is completed, people here should be able to connect to the wider network with fewer road transfers.
The area also has tourism potential. Mukundpur, home to the White Tiger Safari near Rewa, already draws visitors, and better rail access could make the Vindhya region easier to explore for tourists from other parts of the country.
How to plan travel on the new route
- Check the new Devendra Nagar-Churhat service on the official NTES or IRCTC platforms once timings are notified.
- Confirm halts and the number of days the train runs each week, as new services often start with limited frequency.
- For onward journeys, plan connections at Rewa or Satna, which have links to major cities.
- Keep an eye on West Central Railway announcements for changes in timings after the first few weeks.
What happens next
Railway officials have not yet shared the full timetable of the new train in public statements, so passengers should watch for official notices. Work on the remaining parts of the Lalitpur-Singrauli line will continue, and each new section will bring the region closer to full rail connectivity. For Sidhi, though, Saturday's opening already marks a moment many residents had waited a lifetime to see.
